Welcome to All Souls Witchy Women Episode 8: The A Word, our episode about our hopes and dreams for the TV adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches.

With the TV adaptation of A Discovery of Witches about to become available on Sundance Now and Shudder for U.S. and Canadian fans (and fans-to-be), we decided we needed to go a step beyond our blog post about the eight scenes we hope to see adapted from the book and talk more fully about our hopes for the show. Among the things we discuss is how we hope the characters develop, Matthew and Diana to Sarah and Emily and Ysabeau. We also talk about the scenery — the Bishop house!! — and, of course the magic and our favorite quotes we hope get cut and pasted into the script. W

Did we mention the giveaway? Here’s how to win!
To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’re doing an international giveaway too. We’ll be giving away a signed copy of Deb Harkness’ The World of All Souls AND a signed copy of her newest book, Time’s Convert. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment below on what scene you’re hoping to see (if you haven’t seen the show yet) OR if you’ve seen the show (which is okay, we forgive you), you can leave a comment about one of the favorite scenes you’ve already seen. The contest is now closed. We have notified our winner. We, of course, still hope you listen to this podcast. 🙂 And stay tuned for more giveaways in the future!

And now, on to the show!

Housekeeping details: We’ve read the whole All Souls Trilogy and will try to stay on topic if we say a particular show is going to only cover A Discovery of Witches, but we may forget or digress or whatever so consider yourself warned if you’ve only read one of the books. For the record, this particular podcast seems to be fairly safe for those who’ve only read ADOW and haven’t seen the TV version yet from Bad Wolf TV in Wales . Also this podcast is labeled explicit because we sometimes swear and we’re going to talk about sex because, well, there’s sex in the books. So that’s why we gave it the explicit rating. You’ve now been officially warned

Show notes: Each episode we bring you a note about wine because red wine is a main form of sustenance for vampires when they’re not drinking, you know. blood. Oh, and we like wine…a lot. Usually our weekly wine notes come to us compliments of our resident sommelier, Bayard, who knows what he’s talking about because he’s a founding partner at Crafted Brands. This week Bayard discusses sparkling wine, because what better drink for a celebration? (And we already did, champagne.) Don’t know the difference between brut, dry, and sec. Not to worry — you’ll know more after you listen to Bayard. Trust us. The text version of the wine note can be found here.

Where Diana saves Matthew from Juliette and gives him her blood. The power and utter selflessness of her love for him is so compelling there.

    • janet reynolds

I love that scene and thank you for bringing it up. I’m with you in hoping they include it.

  • Lesley Shields

I’m one the lucky UK readers to have seen the whole series and to have read the books. I’ve binged watched it so often… Favourite scenes are too many to count but here goes a few! Dancing with Yzabeau & Diana at Sept Tour, La Pierre ( upsetting in the book, even more to see it), the Bishop house & Tabitha, Diana discovering her powers when Juliette comes calling and any scene between Matthew & Diana. I can’t wait to see series two & three

    • janet reynolds

Counting the days, Leslie, until I am also in the rewatching category! 🙂 So glad you’re giving the whole series the thumbs-up. I saw the premiere at All Souls Con and thought it was headed in the right direction.

I want to see Halloween at the Bishop house! All those jackolanterns

  • Jackie Raymond

I Loved reading who Diana felt when she was rowing, the calm of the water, the rhythm of the stokes. It was filmed beautifully. And I read after that Teresa Actually learned to row for that scene shows her amazing dedication to her craft.

I also love when she is in hole at LA Pierre and found the strength to Fly out into the arms of Matthew.

  • Larissa

Most looking forward to the scene when Matthew returns to Sept-Tours and to Diana, after racing to the lab following the break-in.

  • Sue Rhodes

Matthew in the lab, smelling her hair, realising he cannot get away from it, he sooo loves her. I too have read the trilogy and so excited how they’re going to adapt them.

  • Michelle F

The scene I most want to see is Diana and Matthew dancing at Sept Tours. I’ve seen stills of it on social media, so I know it’s coming. I equally want to see when Matthew returns to Sept Tours after confessing to Diana on the phone that he loves her. 😍❤️

  • Lauren

I’m looking forward to see how Diana and Matthew’s first meeting goes in the show!

  • Kim Larrow

I would love to see the scene with Diana making the agreement with the goddess to save Matthew after Juliette attacks him. I would think this would be a very visual scene with Diana using her blood and the life of the oak tree to heal him. That is true love giving of oneself to save the person you love.

  • Siti Shariff

My favourite scene would have to be the part Diana did the timewalking. Specifically to 1590! The way it was filmed and the suspense was just perfect!

  • Ana Cara-Linda Santos

Difficult to choose. I’ve seen the whole season (seveal times) & what I like the most is:

Introduction to ADOW (Matthew on the bridge)
    When Bishmont meet
His retreet to his friend Hamish and her anguish & despair needing him leading to the reencounter in his oxford quarters
    The heartbeat mention
    The dinner
    The kiss and holding hands
    Meeting Ysabeau
Trying to mend her wounds and forcing Baldwin to comply to his will to protect her
Sophie and her desire to help Diana
The Dance followed by Matthew fighting Domenico
Talking in the phone at distance, away but desiring to be close
Witch wind blowing away Knox and the other witches
    Mating & french bundling LOL
Meeting the aunts & Tabitah + haunted house (got to love it!)
    The release of Meridiana

    More dramatic/ emotional moments:

    Separation leading to witch water
Oubliette (Diana + parents / Matthew to the rescue)
Diana getting to know the truth about being spellbound/parents death/prophecy BOL
Matthew dying and Diana saving him

Wow! There are so many! I love the show and the books, and although slightly different in some aspects, it’s the closest it can get and I appreciate it, because it’s not easy to put what’s on paper on screen.

  • Debbie Cicco

I am looking forward to Matthew and Baldwin and Diana’s kidnapping. The brothers have such a strained relationship.

  • Karen-Malene Jensen Skåden

The one scene that always brings my heart up my throat like a bullet is when the congregation decides on wether or not to let Baldwin live. But from the book I have to say I would love to see the bishop house adding rooms whenever someone new shows up

  • Christie Adams

The forest behind the Bishop house when Matthew tests Diana with hide and seek. Diana starts to realize her powers. When she gives him a ball made of her energy, it shows her trust in Matthew.

  • Charlotte

I’m in the UK so happily have already seen the show. Loved it so much I bought the books and then read them twice!

Favourite scenes well there are so many. Absolute favourites are:
Matthew telling Diana he loves her.
Diana saving Matthew’s life after meeting Juliette.

    Other amazing scenes:
    Matthew and Diana meeting.
Matthew not letting anyone but him take her blood in the lab.
Witchwind in the library, Matthew racing to Diana’s side and how she just needs him to make her feel safe.
Matthew dancing with Ysabeau at Sept-Tours.
Matthew dancing with Diana at Sept-Tours.
Matthew and Baldwin fighting and then racing to rescue Diana.

Can’t fault the adaptation, it’s awesome and I can’t wait for seasons 2 and 3.

  • Kat

The scene I am looking forward to seeing is when Diana makes her pact with the Goddess in order to save Matthew’s life.

  • Kimberly W.

I haven’t seen the show yet but I can’t wait to see Diana travel to the past.

  • Nicole L

I want to see the scene where Matthew FINALLY tells Diana he loves her!!!

  • Nicole L

I want to see the scene where Matthew FINALLY tells Diana he loves her.

  • Jennifer Sharp

I cannot wait to see what the screen can do for the chemistry between them when they are finally mated, oh and witch water. I really wish I could watch the US release of what I anticipate to be an AMAZING show since the books were nothing short of perfection, sadly I will not be able to watch with the rest of the antsy veiwers due to being away from home for a few days. I will have to avoid social media so that no one spoils it for me 😉

  • L Reeve

I have watched season 1 several times and i look forward to season 2 when they have timewalked to their new lives and Diana becomes more trained in her magic and then pregnant. i want to see them all together as the kids grow and the scenes with the family celebrating at Sept Tour with their magical children and familiars , Baldwin and Hamish

  • Dee Russell

Looking forward to January 18th when I have the day off and can spend the day watching the show! I’m hoping we’ll get to see Diana’s dinner for Matthew, and I’m really looking forward to Ysabeau!

  • Rebecca Kennedy

The scene I’m most looking forward to is when Diana saves Matthew after Juliette attacks.

  • Jennifer Cajina

I could say I am looking forward to the scene when Diana has Matthew over for dinner. Those early days I am curious to see how they capture what it building between them. I really can’t wait for all of it though lol!

  • Victoria Barton

I love the scene where Diana saves Matthew from Juliette.

    • janet reynolds

Her strength and focus here are so strong, and I agree that they did a good job with showing Diana coming into her own power here.

  • Stephanie

I love when Matthew and Diana meet for the first time in the library. That moment started a powerful love story.

  • Heatherrae

I’m hoping to see the scene where Matthew cooks for Diana the first time 🙂

  • Aly

My favourite scenes are when Diana and Matthew first met at the Bodleian Library and when they are dancing at Sept Tours. That was such a wonderful scene😍

  • Maria R.

I absolutely loved the scene when Diana is saved by Matthew and Baldwin from the oubliette 💖

  • Alisse Racovita

My favourite scene is when Diana and Matthew are dancing at Sept Tours. It was such a wonderful scene!💖

  • Alisse

My favourite scene is when Diana and Matthew are dancing together at Sept Tours. It was such a wonderful scene !💖

  • Ioana

I have read the books, watch the whole season (I am now watching it for the second time😂) but I got several scenes that I think were mind-blowing for me :
-When Diana and Ysabeau first met
-When Diana asks Matthew how would she taste like
-THE DANCES (Matthew & Yasbeau /Matthew and Diana)🤩
-When Matthew meets Diana’ aunts and The (Haunted😂)House ( I seriously loooove that house😂)
    I can’t wait for season 2 😍😍😍

    • janet reynolds

I am so with you in love for the Bishop House….and I loved how the show did that. I also loved the dances–especially Matthew’s reprise of his dance with Ysabeau. It was so beautiful and poignant.

  • Tammy

Read the books many times over. Just started the series yesterday and on episode 8. So far my favorite scene in there series is when Diana is upset and the witch water comes out of her. Also enjoyed the scene with her parents spellbinding her as I didn’t really see the wbs at ribbons until that was explained. Plus when Matthew finaly tells her he loves her.

  • Melissa

I’m really enjoying seeing the events unfold from Sarah and Em’s point of view, rather than just over the phone.

    • janet reynolds

That is one of the real advantages of TV adaptations of books–you can change point of view and show things rather than simply tell them. Thank you for pointing that out.

  • Leslie Postin

Adored the books! Really enjoyed the tv series scene where we learned exactly how the binding ribbons where applied by James!!
